This project was fun and important for our agency, because winning it was tough and it was a real-deal transactional app with an established iOS audience that Amtrak was looking to migrate onto Android. No fluff, real business, real customers, real behaviors.
We won by having a strong point of view not just on the transactional core of the experience (searching, scheduling, booking, ticketing) but also the aspects that would make the experience exceptional (alerts, profiles, tips, station maps). Our track record in enterprise development also helped as Amtrak is a government agency with stringent processes and vendor reporting requirements.
From a design aspect, we tried to push for something softer and more contemporary and not simply pull from the existing iOS app or the standard Android design playbook. We also needed to address the flaws existing in the iOS apps flows while translating them into the Android patterns. In the end, we delivered both a substantially improved experience with a roadmap for the v2 of the iOS app.
